MEDICAL MUTUAL OF OHIO (MMO), Cleveland, OH (2003 to 2009)
$2.5B health insurance company serving more than 1.6 million healthcare customers through 2,700 employees in 23 locations across Ohio, Indiana, Georgia, and South Carolina. MMO was formerly Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Ohio.

Executive Vice President & Executive Assistant to the President (2003 to 2009)
Responsible for leading 4 corporate divisions including Claims & Customer Service, Care Management, Facilities & Administration, and Human Resources. Reported to the Chairman, President & CEO, managed 1 Executive Vice President, 3 Vice Presidents, a staff of approximately 1,100 employees, and a consolidated annual budget of $125M.

• Claims & Customer Service Division: The Claims Unit was tasked with processing approximately 100,000 unique healthcare claims each business day. The Customer Call Center fielded 12,000 customer and provider calls/emails daily. The division was also responsible for the tracking and resolution of member appeals.

• Negotiated a complex acquisition and led the integration of a provider sponsored HMO with 33,000 lives.
• Incubated and launched a new product line (Medicare Advantage) enrolling 9,000 lives resulting in annual revenue of $70M.
• Initiated an assessment of the company’s core computer systems resulting in the development and implementation of a 5 year, $10M upgrade of both functional and technical attributes.
• Achieved the requirements of Ohio’s Prompt Pay Law by paying 99+% of applicable claims within 30 days and with an average payment accuracy of 99%.
• Improved productivity and turnover within the division by incubating and expanding an innovative work-at-home program for employees.
• Awarded Call Center Excellence Award (1st place - Best use of Technology) by International Quality and Productivity Ctr.

• Care Management Division: Responsible for continuously developing clinical quality initiatives and implementing interventions for providers and members while simultaneously controlling costs for employer groups.

• Achieved highest rating possible for NCQA and URAC re-accreditation (PPO, HMO and POS products) as well as earning “Quality Plus” distinction in Member Connections for innovative practices that help members.
• Conducted a benchmark study of medical management programs and operations resulting in a realignment of resources to effectively meet customer and provider demands.
• Guided the launch of an employee wellness prototype to advance commercialization of a new product offering:
• Established wellness incentives for healthy behaviors.
• Constructed, equipped, and staffed 2 separate fitness centers and enrolled 850 employees.

• Facilities & Administration Division: Responsible for over 650,000 square feet of office space in multiple locations, a mailroom center that distributed over 1M pieces per month, a print center that produced over 60 million images annually as well as record retention, security, and purchasing functions.

• Led a business continuity initiative to address prolonged inaccessibility to facilities.
• Directed a host of multi-million dollar facility improvements and capital expenditures resulting in improved utilization and efficiency.

• Human Resources Department: Responsible for traditional HR services commensurate with a $2.5B company.

• Led a corporate-wide diversity initiative resulting in the formation of a Board level committee and creation of workforce and supplier policy statements, Employee Council, employee survey, and increased diversity awareness.
• Executed a corporate-wide base pay review initiative, the company’s first in 15 years, as well as its first all-employee climate survey in 5 years.
• Led analyses and modification of a 401(k) and defined contribution plan as well as a non-qualified deferred compensation plan and restoration plan for highly compensated employees.
• Awarded the NorthCoast99 “Best Places to Work in Northeast Ohio” for 6 consecutive years.

• Led a host of corporate wide initiatives including Core Systems Modernization, Electronic Transactions Strategy, Business Continuity, Pride Quality Program, and Member Education & Research.
